Should You Use Humor on Social Media?
To help your company determine whether or not it should use humor on social media, we’ve developed a checklist of sorts. Answer these questions.
Does your content seem to get lost in the stream of never-ending content on Facebook and Twitter?
If so, try humorous posts/tweet and see if that helps. Sometimes humor causes us humans, always in it for the laugh, to stop and really take in the message.
Do fans and followers remember your posts after they’ve read them?
If not, perhaps your content is not memorable enough. Humor is usually memorable.
Do your fans and followers know that you’re human?
If not, humor might be a good option. Humor helps companies to show their human side. Humor can make companies more relatable, too.
Do you really and truly know your audience?
If you don’t, you probably shouldn’t dabble into humor. Only use humor when you know your audience’s tastes and preferences – that’s how you’ll know if they’ll find what you’re posting funny or not.
Does your company hire funny people?
It’s not an easy task to think up funny, appropriate, topical, on-point content. If you have the right team in place, though, you just might be able to pull it off.
Do you typically post about worldwide events and holidays?
Events like the Superbowl, the Olympics, the World Cup, and any holiday can give your company the opportunity to apply humor in a topical way, applying real events while they’re most relevant to your audience.
Did answering these questions help you to decide whether your company should use humor on social media? It’s not for everyone, but it is a powerful tool when placed in the right hands.
